The World Health Organization (WHO) is undertaking a worldwide consultation to assess whether the 1994 WHO definition of osteoporosis—both its wording and its DXA-based operational criteria—continues to meet present-day scientific and public-health needs. Advances in knowledge, technology and equity demand a fresh, collective review. We therefore seek the informed views of clinicians, researchers, policymakers, programme managers, industry partners, patient and caregiver advocates, and other professionals engaged in bone health.
What the survey covers?
- The scientific validity and clinical utility of the current definition across diverse populations and settings;
- Equity implications, including sex- and ethnicity-specific reference data;
- Availability and accessibility of diagnostic tools (e.g. DXA) in low- and middle-income contexts; and
- Opportunities to strengthen guidance for early diagnosis, risk stratification and fracture prevention.
Confidentiality: All responses are anonymous and will be reported only in aggregate form. You are invited to complete the online survey (link below), which consists of five sections—about 36 questions in total—and takes roughly 20–25 minutes. You may save your progress and return at any time before submitting.
